Delhi Jal Board Vice Chairman Shri Somnath Bharti inspected the Coronation Pillar Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) on Wednesday with senior board officials. During the visit, Shri Somnath Bharti checked the monitoring room, lab, and section of the WWTP where the wastewater treatment takes place. He showed samples of sewage water coming into the WWTP and the treated water that comes out of the plant to the media, stating that the wastewater is being treated according to prescribed parameters. He also declared that the quality of treated water in this plant is almost equivalent to that of drinking water.
Shri Somnath Bharti stated that “The Delhi Government and the Delhi Jal Board would ensure that every drop of wastewater is treated before it spills into the Yamuna in its 22 kilometres stretch in Delhi. The Delhi Government will fulfil Chief Minister Shri Arvind Kejriwal’s promise to clean the Yamuna, just as it has fulfilled other promises.”
Shri Somnath Bharti further announced that the treated water from the Coronation Pillar WWTP would be reused in the future, and efforts are underway to incorporate the treated water into the system for reuse. He added that under the leadership of Chief Minister Shri Arvind Kejriwal, all sources that make the Yamuna dirty are being tracked and trapped through WWTPs, and wastewater from these sources is treated according to the prescribed 10/10 parameters.
Shri Somnath Bharti further said, “Chief Minister Shri Arvind Kejriwal’s track record shows that he has fulfilled his promises, including in education, power, health, and water sectors. The promise made by Chief Minister Shri Arvind Kejriwal for the cleaning of the Yamuna River will also be fulfilled by the Delhi Government, just like other promises that have been fulfilled.”
Furthermore, during his visit, Shri Somnath Bharti stated that the Coronation Pillar WWTP, with a capacity of 70 MGD, was inaugurated in 2022. The sewerage of five surrounding assembly constituencies comes into this plant, and the wastewater cleaned in this plant is almost drinkable. He further revealed that the Coronation Pillar WWTP is the largest wastewater treatment plant in Asia, and about Rs. 500 crore have been invested in its development. The amount of electricity required to run this WWTP will also be generated in this plant, with an expected output of nearly 60,000 units of electricity. The gas and sludge resulting from the treatment of wastewater will be used to generate electricity.
Shri Somnath Bharti urged the people of Delhi to visit this WWTP to see how Chief Minister Shri Arvind Kejriwal is committed to cleaning the Yamuna and how the Delhi Government is working on this mission.
The Delhi Jal Board is continuously striving to make the Yamuna clean, and under the Yamuna Action Plan – III and “Clean Yamuna Mission,” it is expanding the sewer network in the national capital. It is laying sewer lines in new areas and constructing world-class wastewater treatment plants for wastewater management. To achieve the goal of “Clean Yamuna, Healthy Delhi,” three new WWTPs are under construction at a rapid pace: Okhla WWTP, Rithala WWTP, and Kondli WWTP. The development work of these plants is in the final stages. Furthermore, old WWTPs are being upgraded, and their capacities are being enhanced with new technologies. The ultimate goal of all these efforts is to reduce the amount of untreated wastewater discharged into the Yamuna and make the river clean.
