Improving public-transport uptake by enhancing the services
The AAP Delhi Govt’s key strategy to combat vehicular pollution is by encouraging Delhiites to take to public transportation systems.
- Toward this end, Transport Minister Kailash Gehlot, on 5th July 2018 announced a Last-mile Connectivity plan, whereby buses will be accessible within 500 m of every household with 15 min frequency or less.
- The free-bus rides for women scheme was announced in August 2019 and implemented on 29th October 2019. The scheme is aimed at providing safe, easily accessible and affordable public transport to women in Delhi.
- On 5th Dec 2019, CM Arvind Kejriwal announced that installation of CCTVs, GPS, and Panic Buttons in all of Delhi’s buses has started.
In the last 3 years, the number of Delhi public-transport commuters has increased from 4 million to 4.62million per day.

Registration of electric vehicles
- Prior to the EV policy, the total share of EVs in the newly purchased vehicles in Delhi was 0.2%. Within 7 months of the introduction of the EV policy in August 2020, the share of EV purchased had increased from 0.2% to 2.21%.
- By end-Aug 2021, as many as 17,605 new EVs had been registered since the date of notification of the policy in Aug 2020. In the months of July and Aug 2021, the registration of Electric vehicles was actually more than that of CNG vehicles.
- As of 10th Sep 2021, Delhi has already recorded more e-vehicle registrations in 2021 than the whole of 2020.
- During Sep to Nov, 2021, Electric Vehicles accounted for 9% of vehicles sold in Delhi, 6 times higher than the national average of 1.6%. With 9540 EVs being sold in Delhi, the sale of electric vehicles surpassed that of CNG and Diesel vehicles.
- As of 5th Nov 2021, the e-vehicle share (out of total new vehicles registered) in Delhi was 7%. The EV share jumped from 1% to 7% in just 1 quarter.
- In Dec 2021 alone, 3785 EVs were registered.
- In 2021, the share of EVs in total vehicle registrations was 5.6%.
- Delhi is the only mid to large Indian state to reach 7% EV penetration by Sep 2021 while most states are still under 2%.
Pollution Under Control (PUC) Certificate
Pollution Under Control (PUC) certificate made mandatory to refuel petrol/diesel vehicles. Delhi continues to lead the way nationally when it comes to bringing progressive environmental regulations.
