Kejriwal Government’s Delhi Board of School Education (DBSE) declared its first board results today. The results were announced by Education Minister Ms. Atishi during a press conference. While announcing the results, she said, “Today is a historic day for the education system of this country as the Kejriwal Government’s DBSE has declared its first results for Classes 10 and 12. This is a landmark day as DBSE has set a new milestone for the education system of this country through its unique assessment process for government schools.”
In the first year, 1,574 students cleared Class 10 DBSE board exams, and 662 students cleared Class 12 exams. The pass percentage in Class 10th was recorded at 99.49% and for Class 12 at 99.25%.
Ms. Atishi added, “As we all know, education has the greatest contribution to the development of any nation. Today, if we look at the history of any developed nation, we will find that education and various innovative education reforms have played a very important role. These countries ensured that all children in their nation have equal access to world-class education, irrespective of their background. Be it the USA, Canada, or France, these countries ensured quality education for their children. And this is the reason for their recognition as developed nations today.”
She added that in the past 8 years, the Kejriwal government has prominently focused on education. Ever since the CM Shri Arvind Kejriwal-led government came to power, every year it has been ensured that the highest allocation is made to education in the financial budget. Nearly 25% of the budget goes to education every year. Due to this major budgetary allocation, a significant transformation has been witnessed in Delhi government schools’ infrastructure, teachers’ training, and the quality of school textbooks and uniforms. As a result, in the past three years, lakhs of students have shifted from private schools to Delhi government schools.
Speaking about the need for DBSE, the Education Minister said, “Education is not just limited to scoring good marks. If we look at our traditional Indian Education System, the main focus is always on rote learning. In the Indian Education System, it is believed that children who are good at rote learning get good marks. This is the reason why premier high-quality institutions of India take separate entrance exams for admitting students because they do not trust our existing education system, examination system, and students graduating from them. They believe that students score these marks by following the rote learning method.”
She further said, “But if we want to change this and make India No. 1 in the world, then our children need to move beyond the pages of their textbooks and learn more. In the age of rapidly changing technological work, when any information is just a click away, we need our education system to produce professionals who can think critically, analyse their surroundings, and find solutions to new-age problems. Keeping this in view, the Kejriwal government launched DBSE in 2021.”
Ms. Atishi added that in the same year, the Delhi government had signed an MoU with the International Baccalaureate (IB). Thereafter, the curriculum and assessment process at DBSE were designed at par with international schools in collaboration.
2249 students appeared in the first board exam under DBSE
This year, 1582 students appeared in the Class 10 DBSE board exams for the secondary certificate assessment and 667 students appeared in the Class 12 board exams for the senior secondary certificate assessment. The students who appeared for the Class 10 exam had 6 foundational subjects (English, Hindi, Maths, Science, Social Science, Entrepreneurial Mindset and Digital Design). Apart from these, as ASoSEs are known for providing specialized education from Class 9, DBSE along with the aforementioned subjects, also organised exams for subjects like World of Work, Systems and Societies, Advanced Technologies, Design and Commerce, Advanced Maths and Science, Media, Creative Writing etc. For Class 12, DBSE has taken exams in only one stream this year, STEM.
How is the DBSE examination and assessment system different from other Boards’?
Education Minister Ms. Atishi stated, “In the traditional examination system followed by other boards, a student’s future depends on a three-hour annual exam. If a student misses this exam for any reason, they may have to skip a year and retake the exam. To address this issue, DBSE conducts two term exams, with the results of both semesters contributing to the final grades. Additionally, year-long projects are included in the final results. DBSE’s assessment is a continuous process based on students’ performance throughout the year, rather than a single end-of-year exam.”
Furthermore, DBSE exams differ from other boards as they do not rely solely on rote learning. Each subject has its own assessment criteria, including the understanding of the subject, investigative techniques, and communication skills. Students are presented with case studies based on the chapters and are required to provide solutions.
Lastly, DBSE’s report card is unique compared to others’. Instead of simply listing subjects, marks, and remarks, the report card is based on an eight-level Grade Point Average (GPA).
Delhi government schools perform better than private schools under CBSE across nation
Ms. Atishi also said, “Not only this, our Delhi government schools have also performed the best as per the highest conventional benchmarks set for schools of this country. In the past five years, Delhi government schools have been securing excellent and better results than private schools in CBSE board exams. Since 2018, every year, results of Delhi government schools have been above 90%. This year too, when CBSE 12th board results were declared, the pass percentage of Delhi government schools was recorded as higher than the national average as well as compared to private schools in the country. The pass percentage of private schools across the country was 87.95% whereas Delhi government schools recorded 91.85% pass percentage,” she said.
