Sewer jam caused by DMRC road excavation work; problem to be resolved within 15 days
Delhi Jal Board was receiving complaints of sewer jams in Nangloi area from the local MLA and people. Taking cognizance of the complaints, DJB Vice Chairman Somnath Bharti visited Nangloi assembly constituency on Tuesday. After a thorough inspection, Somnath Bharti said that Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal is alert 24 hours of the day about the problems of the people of Delhi. He said that he has come to the Nangloi area on the instructions of Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and complaints from the people living in the area. He said that due to the construction work carried out by Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) in Nangloi area, the sewerage system of Delhi Jal Board has been affected. DMRC excavated the roads without giving prior information to Delhi Jal Board due to which the underground sewer line passing through the site was broken. He said that due to this negligence of DMRC and the breaking of the sewer line, the problem of sewer jam has arisen at many places in Nangloi and Punjabi Bagh. People living in the area and DJB are suffering the consequences of DMRC’s negligent act.
Better coordination between agencies & prior notice to DJB for road excavation is necessary
DJB Vice Chairman Somnath Bharti said that Delhi Jal Board investigated the matter and found that the sewer line was damaged due to the construction work carried out by DMRC at the damaged site about one and a half month ago. DMRC had neither informed DJB before carrying out the excavation work nor it informed DJB after the sewer line was broken by it. DMRC and DJB officials have been directed to complete the repair work of the sewer line within 15 days and bring the situation back to normal. Also, as an alternative arrangement, efforts are being made to drain the sewer wastewater by installing high capacity motor pumps. The DJB Vice Chairman said that to avoid these types of situations, it is important for agencies like DMRC, MCD, IGL etc. to have better coordination with Delhi Jal Board. It should be obligatory to give prior information to DJB before the excavations of the roads. He said that with such a system in place, people will not have to face problems like the present one.
