Minister of Food & Civil Supplies, Govt. of NCT of Delhi Sh. Imran Hussain took review meeting today with Commissioner, Food and Civil Supplies (CFS) and senior officers of F&S Deptt., Development Deptt., APMC, DAMB, NAFED and Delhi State Civil Supplies Corporation (DSCSC) Ltd. to review the issue of sudden and unexplained rise in onion prices.

Prices of onion in Delhi have recently again shown an upward trend, ranging from Rs.60/- to Rs.80/- per kg. on 4.11.2019 and Rs.70/- to Rs.85/- per kg. on 5.11.2019 and 6.11.2019 while wholesale prices were Rs.5,625/- per quintal on 4.11.2019, Rs.4,850/- per quintal on 5.11.2019 and Rs.3,775/- per quintal on 6.11.2019 respectively.

During the meeting, CFS informed that unexpected rise in onion prices is primarily due to heavy and incessant rains in supply regions of onions, labour force taking off during the Diwali, Chhat Pooja season etc. which disrupted loading of onions and thus resulted in short supply of onions in the wholesale markets of Delhi.

Minister expressed his concern about sudden and abnormal increase in onion prices and informed that Govt. of NCT of Delhi is fully geared up to tackle the situation effectively in larger public interest.

Shri Imran Hussain, Minister further informed that he has directed CFS to immediately ensure re-commencement of the door-step retailing of onions process for providing succour and relief to the people of Delhi as was recently done in the past months of September-October, 2019.   Minister also directed that NAFED may be requested to supply 10 truck-loads of onion on daily basis to DSCSC Ltd. which will immensely help in bringing down the retail prices on onion in Delhi. DSCSC has since placed the order to NAFED for daily supply of 10 truck-loads of good quality of onion to Delhi.

Minister also directed CFS to immediately strengthen and intensify enforcement activities to check hoarding, black-marketing and cartelization of onions etc. in coordination with the various concerned agencies. Daily action taken reports have also been sought from the CFS for regular monitoring of the onion price situation in Delhi.

Minister observed that the earlier initiative of making available onion to the general public by Govt. of NCT of Delhi in September-October 2019 was well received and appreciated. This initiative had also led to the fall and stabilization of retail prices of onion in Delhi.

Minister also directed that all the agencies should work in coordination with each other to ensure timely, regular and adequate supply of onion through mobile vans engaged for sale of onion in all the Assembly Constituencies/Municipal Wards of Delhi.

Sh. Imran Hussain, further informed that the Govt. is closely and regularly monitoring and reviewing the price movement of onion with officers concerned.  Minister reiterated the commitment of Delhi Govt. to make available onions and other essential commodities at affordable prices in Delhi.
