NEW DELHI:

Senior AAP Leader and Cabinet Minister, Shri Saurabh Bharadwaj, highlighted the ever-increasing crime rate in Delhi. The AAP leader pointed towards the inefficiency of Lieutenant Governor (LG) Shri Vinai Kumar Saxena, in handling Delhi’s law and order.

Shri Saurabh Bharadwaj drew attention to concerning data from the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), revealing Delhi’s unfortunate distinction as the highest crime-rate city in the nation, coupled with a dismal rate of charge sheets. Expressing dismay at the surge in daylight criminal activities, including henious murders and shootings, the Delhi Minister demanded accountability from the LG. He also pointed towards the corruption within the Delhi Police and the undermining of women’s safety initiatives by removing bus marshals and staff from the Delhi Commission for Women. Shri Saurabh Bharadwaj urged the LG to focus on improving the law and order situation of the national capital and also let the elected Delhi government work.

Speaking on the issue of ever so increasing crime rates in the national capital, Senior AAP leader and Cabinet Minister Shri Saurabh Bharadwaj said, “For the last few days, it has been seen that heinous crimes are surging in Delhi and the law and order situation of Delhi is going from bad to worse. The safety & security of Delhi has almost collapsed in the last few months. If we look at the NCRB data, then at present the crime rate in Delhi is the highest in the whole country. According to the NCRB data, today in Delhi, about 1832 crimes are happening per 1 lakh population, whereas at the national level, this average is about 258 crimes per 1 lakh population . The average number of criminal cases in Delhi is 7 times higher than in the country. Along with this, about 1189 criminal cases are being registered in Delhi every day.”

Giving examples of some horrific incidents that happened in Delhi yesterday, the Delhi Minister said that yesterday a video came out in which it was seen that a witness of a murder case in the Jafrabad area was stabbed by five people in broad daylight in front of public. He was brutally murdered by stabbing him at about fifty places. Similarly, in a VIP area like RK Puram in Delhi, an auto-rickshaw driver killed a Seema Suraksha Bal (SSB) constable by slitting his throat with a sharp knife due to arguments over an altercation in fare. Similarly, in the Tilak Nagar area, a car showroom owner was asked to pay a ransom of ₹5 crores and five rounds of firing were done outside the car showroom to scare him. Today’s news is that a person was murdered and his body was thrown in the canal.

Expressing his concerns over the deteriorating law and order, Shri Saurabh Bharadwaj stated, “If we talk about charge sheets in all these cases, then charge sheets are done in only 30% of the cases that are registered. When 70% of the cases are not even reaching the court, then how will the criminals get punishment and how will the victims get justice? In this way, the morale of the criminals will be higher and crime will increase even more.”

“The increasing criminal cases in Delhi are direct proof of the failure of the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi, Mr. Vinai Saxena. The Delhi LG has only two departments under him, first Delhi Police and second Delhi Development Authority (DDA). LG Mr. Vinai Saxena has ruined the police system of Delhi. Like a school principal, LG Mr. Vinai Saxena, writes letters to Delhi government ministers and lectures them on their work efficiency . He is only and only obstructing the work of the Delhi government by creating obstacles in the work of the government through the officers. He has miserably failed in his duties of maintaining law and order in Delhi and running the DDA department smoothly,” the Delhi Minister mentioned.

Shri Saurabh Bharadwaj shared that when the BJP government came to power in the Centre in 2014, there were about 5,500 vacancies in Delhi Police, today these vacancies have increased to about 13,000. The police do not have enough staff to run the system smoothly. The police department already has a shortage of police personnel and on top of that, the central government has reduced the budget of the police department by 4.5%. In this way the number of crimes will not be curbed, rather the crimes will increase even more.

Talking about crimes against women, Shri Saurabh Bharadwaj said that about 30% of the crimes against women seen in the big cities of the country are happening only in Delhi, and not only this, for the last 3 years, the crime incidents in Delhi are at a higher level than other states. Today 14,466 cases of criminal incidents against women are registered in Delhi. Which is about 30% of crimes across 19 states. Despite so many criminal incidents against women, the Delhi LG did two such things due to which the system went from bad to worse instead of improving. The first thing the LG did was to remove 8,000 bus marshals deployed for the safety of women from Delhi buses, and the second thing the LG did was to paralyse the helpline number 181 issued for the help of women by the Delhi Commission for Women. The LG ruined the Women’s Commission by removing its employees.

“The LG is interfering in the work of the departments of the Delhi Government, he is pointing fingers at the elected Delhi Government, but his own departments are getting worse day by day. The LG talks a lot about corruption, but today, corruption in the Police Department of Delhi has increased significantly in the last 2 years. In the last 2 years, criminal incidents have increased in Delhi, vacancies in Delhi Police have increased, and corruption has increased in Delhi, but instead of doing his work, the LG is busy interfering in the work of the elected government of Delhi. I want to request the Delhi LG, Vinai Saxena, that he should pay attention to his own departments. He should fulfil the responsibilities given to him in the right manner and let us do our work,” Shri Saurabh Bharadwaj concluded.
