PWD Minister Ms. Atishi, on Friday, reviewed the progress of various flyover projects currently underway in Delhi with senior officials of the department. It is to be noted that by the end of this year, the Delhi government will dedicate four new flyovers and two underpasses to the people of Delhi. These projects include the Sarai Kale Khan-T junction flyover, the doubling and expansion of the flyover from Punjabi Bagh to Raja Garden, a six-lane flyover between Anand Vihar and Apsara Border, a double-decker flyover at the Ghonda-Brijpuri junction, and the Mukarba Chowk underpass, among other important projects.
While reviewing the projects, the PWD Minister said, “All these projects will fulfil the vision of Delhi Chief Minister Shri Arvind Kejriwal to make Delhi traffic jam free. These projects are extremely important for making traffic smooth and after their completion, lakhs of daily commuters will be rid of traffic. PWD is working round the clock to ensure the completion of projects in stipulated timelines.”
She added that the Kejriwal government is the only government in the country that not only completes the work on time but also completes it at a lower cost, saving crores of rupees of the public. Even these projects will save hundreds of crores of the public annually. She further directed the officials to set monthly targets for all ongoing flyover projects and complete them within the timelines. Most importantly, every month, a progress report should be submitted directly to her.
Four flyovers being built by the Kejriwal Government to be ready by the end of this year
The Sarai Kale Khan T-junction flyover, being built by the Kejriwal government, will be ready by July this year. With the construction of the new flyover, the Sarai Kale Khan T-junction will become a signal-free corridor and will provide relief from traffic jams to the lakhs of vehicles passing via this route everyday.
The doubling and expansion of the flyovers, from Punjab Bagh to Raja Garden is being done under this project. Both existing flyovers are 2-lane and one-way. Under the project, both flyovers’ will be expanded to 3 lanes, and a new 3-lane flyover will also be built along with both flyovers to make them 2-way. With the doubling of flyovers, the corridor between Punjab Bagh and Raja Garden will also be expanded up to 1400 meters. This corridor between Punjab Bagh Flyover and Raja Garden Flyover is part of the Ring Road, and the traffic load here is quite high because Haryana’s traffic comes here using the Rohtak Road (NH-10). Additionally, this corridor also connects North Delhi to South Delhi, Gurgaon, and other parts of the NCR. The existing one-way flyovers and low-capacity intersections here are not adequate for the current traffic load, resulting in traffic congestion. The construction of this corridor will shift the existing road’s traffic to the elevated road, which will benefit lakhs of people commuting in Delhi NCR every day. This corridor will be ready by the end of this year.
A six-lane flyover of approximately 1440 meters in length, is being constructed between Anand Vihar ROB and Apsara Border ROB, on Road Number-56. After its construction, people will be relieved from the problem of traffic jams that occur at the red light near Ramprastha Colony, Vivek Vihar, and Shreshtha Vihar. After the construction of the rapid metro station by NCRTC, approximately 1.48 lakh vehicles will pass on this flyover daily. This flyover will also be ready by the end of this year.
A double-decker flyover is being constructed by the Kejriwal government at the Karawal Nagar, Ghonda-Brijpuri junction in North-East Delhi, connecting Yamuna Vihar and Bhajanpura over a distance of 1.4 km. The lower deck will be a four-lane flyover, while the upper deck will have a metro line. This unique model of a double-decker flyover has resulted in savings of crores of rupees. This is a densely populated area which has been utilized efficiently by the authorities. After the completion of this project, the people in the surrounding areas will not have to face long traffic jams. The flyover and metro’s integrated model will prove to be better for the environment too. More than half of the work has already been completed, and the flyover will be operational by the end of this year.
2 new underpasses at Pragati Maidan and Mukarba Chowk to ease traffic in the capital
Pragati Maidan Corridor Development- majority of the work on the Pragati Maidan Corridor Development project by the Delhi government’s PWD has been completed. Currently, the work of constructing an underpass is in process and will be completed by the end of July.
Mukarba Chowk Underpass- The Kejriwal government is constructing an underpass from Mukarba Chowk to Haiderpur. Currently, vehicles going towards Badli or Outer Ring Road have to take a loop at Mukarba Chowk and come back towards Shalimar Bagh, but after the construction of this underpass, vehicles will have to cover 1.5 km less. This underpass will also be ready by the end of this year.
