Mission Chunauti to improve learning outcomes

Mission Chunauti was launched in 2016 to reduce failure rates and improve foundational learning skills, attain SCERT learning outcomes

As a result of the weak foundational learning skills, children of the Government schools of Delhi were facing an uphill task to graduate from Class 9 to 10. 

• 50% of students were failing Class 9 every year since 2013-14
• 75% of Class 6 students were unable to read school textbooks in 2016

The goals to achieve through Mission Chunauti were:

• Substantial increase in the pass percentage of Class 9.
• All Students in upper primary grades should be able to read, write and do basic Maths.

All students attain the prescribed learning outcomes appropriate to their grades. This initiative directly impacts  about 9.5 lakh students enrolled in Std 6 to 9 of its 1024 schools.

Pragati Series for additional learning material

Pragati Series is one of the innovative interventions in teaching practices by the AAP Delhi Government, with the goal of preparing every child for success in life.

The idea of Pragati was conceived to provide level appropriate learning material which can be created and used by the teachers. Supplementary learning material for students of Classes 6 to 8 in English, Hindi, Maths, Science and Social Science subjects is created through this. This is used in addition to the textbooks. 

Basic content for Pragati is created by teachers, edited by Mentor Teachers and reviewed by subject experts from the District Institute of Education and Training (DIET). 

Pragati uses simple language, illustrations, examples from the context of children in Delhi and worksheets to help children understand the concepts. 

Mission Buniyaad campaign to improve students’ grades

Mission Buniyaad, a 4 month long campaign, was launched in April 2018 after the National Achievement Survey (NAS) found that the majority of students in Classes 3 to 8 in Government Schools did not perform well as per their grade level assessment.   

This program was run in Classes 3 to 5 in the MCD schools and in classes 6 to 8 in Delhi Government schools. 

This focused campaign was launched with activities to make students perform well as per their grade level assessment.

It has led to a 20% increase in the number of students between Class 3 and 5 who can solve arithmetic division problems.

There has been a 12% increase (between pre-test and post-test) in the number of students between Class 3 and 5 who can read a story in Hindi, and a 15% increase in children of Class 6 to class 9 who can read ‘advance story’ in Hindi.

Summer Camps conducted for Class VI students to bridge learning gaps

In 2016, summer camps were conducted in 551 Delhi Government schools as a pilot and with it’s phenomenal success, this was implemented in all 1024 schools in 2017. 

The summer camps were conceptualised as opportunities to bridge learning gaps of children entering Delhi government schools for the first time from MCD schools after Class 5. 

Activities and games were designed in a way that also educates children in the process. Each school had assigned at least two teachers to conduct the camps.

A closing ceremony was held with certificates being handed out to all the children as a token of appreciation for their participation.

Spoken English project

Special classes were conducted in 2019-2020 to cover 40,000 students of Class XI for development of spoken English skills and Communicative Competence. (Source: Status Report of Outcome Budget 2019-2020)

Agencies selected for this project were Macmillan Publishers India Pvt. Ltd. – British Council India and Academy for Computers Training (Gujarat) Pvt.  Ltd. who conducted pilot classes for 160 hours spread between 23 to 80 days in 2020.
