Water Minister Atishi wrote a letter to Haryana CM Shri Nayab Singh Saini on Sunday on the issue of Haryana continuously reducing the water supply to Delhi through the Munak Canal. She demanded from Haryana CM to give Delhi its share of water through the Munak Canal. Water Minister Atishi said if Haryana does not give adequate amount of water to Delhi today, then in the next 1-2 days, there will be a big problem of water in every area of Delhi.
She said as per the agreement between Delhi-Haryana in 2018 in the Upper Yamuna River Board, Delhi should get 1050 cusecs of water daily from the Munak Canal. During summers, 980 to 1030 cusecs of water reaches Bawana Contact Point from the Munak Canal, but in the last one week, it has decreased drastically.
The Water Minister that the amount of water received by Delhi from the Munak Canal reached 840 cusecs, due to which all seven water treatment plants of Delhi will be badly affected. The chief minister of Haryana should ensure that 1050 cusecs of water of its share is released to Delhi from the Munak Canal so that the people of Delhi do not have to face water crisis, she added.
In a letter written to Shri Nayab Singh Saini, Water Minister Atishi demanded his immediate intervention as Chief Minister on the issue of Haryana not releasing water into the Yamuna. She said despite writing letters continuously on this issue in the last several days, neither any appropriate action was taken, nor any answer was received.
Water Minister Atishi further wrote in the letter that Delhi is dependent on Yamuna water for its daily needs. And for the last few days, Haryana is not releasing its share of water to Delhi from the Munak Canal in sufficient quantity. Due to this, the people of Delhi are facing a lot of problems.
She said as per the agreement in the 53rd meeting called by the Upper Yamuna River Board in May 2018, about 1050 cusecs was allocated to Delhi through CLC (carrier-lined channels) and DSB (Delhi sub-branch) canals through the Munak Canal. But due to transmission loss, it remains about 1013 cusecs by the time it reaches Delhi. It is measured at the Bawana Contact Point in Delhi through flow meter. And only last week these flow meters were checked by the representatives of the Upper Yamuna River Board.
Water Minister Atishi said that during summer, water is available at the Bawana Contact Point between 980 to 1030 cusecs. But in the last one week, it has decreased drastically, and it has come down to 840 cusecs.
She said that Delhi has seven water treatment plants, which are dependent on Yamuna water for production. In such a situation, due to the continuous decrease in raw water, these seven plants are not able to run at their optimum capacity. And the way the amount of water Delhi gets from the Munak Canal has decreased from 1050 cusecs to 840 cusecs, all seven water treatment plants of Delhi will be unable to produce enough water.
Water Minister Atishi said, “If Haryana does not release enough water today, then a big crisis will arise in Delhi in the next 1-2 days. Therefore, I request the Chief Minister of Haryana to ensure that 1050 cusecs of water is released for Delhi from the Munak Canal.”
