Various political parties from across the country on Sunday held a mega rally, ‘Loktantra Bachao’ (Save Democracy), under the umbrella of the INDIA alliance at the Ramlila Maidan. All leaders slammed the BJP for its dictatorial attitude and misuse of central agencies to crush the opposition.
To protest against the arrest of Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal and save the country’s Constitution and democracy, all the constituent parties of the INDIA alliance came together on one platform and gave a message to the dictatorial government that it is about to end. The INDIA alliance also made a five-point demand for level playing field in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.
Prominent speakers included Punjab Chief Minister and senior AAP leader Sardar Bhagwant Mann, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi, CPI (M) leader Sitaram Yechury, Samajwadi Party Akhilesh Yadav, Shiv Sena (UBT) Uddhav Thakre, NCP Sharad Yadav, Jharkhand chief minister Champai Soren, Jammu and Kashmir National Conference president Dr Farooq Abdullah, Jammu and Kashmir People’s Democratic Party president Mehbooba Mufti Sayed, Rashtriya Janata Dal leader Tejashwi Yadav, TMC MP Derek O’Brien, Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi, All India Forward Bloc general secretary G. Devrajan and others.
Senior Congress leader Smt Sonia Gandhi also shared the dais with the INDIA alliance leaders.
Delhi Chief Minister Shri Arvind Kejriwal’s wife Smt Sunita Kejriwal and Jharkhand former chief minister Hemant Soren’s wife Kalpana Soren also spoke on the occasion.
Invoking the Ramayana, Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi reminded Pime Minister Modi of the message from the life of Lord Ram and the epic Ramayana. “Power does not last forever. Power comes and goes. Ego gets destroyed one day,” she said.
Drawing a parallel with the present powerplay, Priyanka Gandhi said, “When Lord Ram fought for truth, he did not have power, he did not have resources, he did not even have a chariot. Ravana had the chariot, the resources, the army. Ravana had the gold, he lived in Lanka of gold. Lord Ram had truth, hope, faith, love, charity, humility, patience, courage and truth. I want to remind all the members of the government sitting in power, our Prime Minister Narendra Modi, what was the message of the life story of Lord Ram.”
She also read out the five-point demands of the INDIA alliance. “First, the Election Commission of India should ensure level playing field in the Lok Sabha elections. Second, the Election Commission should stop the coercive action taken by the Income Tax Department and CBI against opposition political parties with the aim of rigging the elections. Third, we demand immediate release of Shri Hemant Soren and Shri Arvind Kejriwal ji. Fourth, the forcible action to financially strangle opposition political parties during elections should be stopped immediately. Fifth, an SIT should be constituted under the supervision of the Supreme Court to investigate the allegations of vendetta, extortion and money laundering by the BJP using electoral bonds,” she said.
Condemning the arrests of Shri Arvind Kejriwal and Shri Hemant Soren, Congress president Shri Mallikarjun Kharge said, “Either you give pre-dictated statements or become mute. What was the crime of Shri Arvind Kejriwal and Shri Hemant Soren? These BJP led agencies could have done it later, they could have just investigated them. Why do it during elections when notification has already been done? You arrested him right before the elections. Shri Hemant Soren was also arrested because he supported the alliance and did not succumb to their pressure. This is why Modi levelled false cases against them. Is this level playing field?”
Senior Congress leader Shri Mallikarjun Kharge stated that the BJP led central government and PM Modi are murdering the democracy and constitution of India. They are taking away the rights of the people and suppressing the opposition parties, obstructing their election campaigning by force. “The central government has already seized our bank accounts prior to the elections, they have imposed a hefty penalty of Rs 3567 crore on the Congress party. How will we campaign for the elections?” he reasoned.
“We have all gathered here to save the country, the unity, the democracy, and the constitution of India. Modi does not want democracy, he believes in dictator rule.” He stated that Modi is murdering democracy and using constitutional agencies as their political agencies, whether it’s the ED or the CBI. They are threatening opposition leaders through these probe agencies. The public needs to remove Modi and his ideology, otherwise the country will never flourish. We need to fight to safeguard democracy and the constitution. The Constitution gives you reservation and fundamental rights, if it is destroyed, then there will be no basic rights. Had they made the constitution, they wouldn’t have given voting rights to women, because their ideology is that way.
“The BJP is like a poison, RSS is like a poison, if you want to taste poison, you are going to die.”
The Congress president said this is the fight for the 140-crore people of India, to safeguard the rights of the poor, farmers, labourers, and the small-scale industrialists. The upcoming elections will be a fight to protect democracy. The elections will be for the employment of youth, to reduce inflation, to fix MSP on crops, and for the rights of people, stated Shri Mallikarjun Kharge.
Taking potshots at the Prime Minister, Shri Mallikarjun Kharge quoted, “Appeal bhi tum, Daleel bhi tum, Gawah bhi tum, Vakeel bhi tum. Jise bhi chaaho, haraam keh do, jise bhi chaaho, halaal kar do.” (You are the appeal; you are the argument. You are the witness; you are the lawyer. You defame anyone you want; you can punish anyone you want).
Jharkhand CM Shri Champai Soren condemned the arrest of Shri Arvind Kejriwal and Shri Hemant Soren. He said, “Constant efforts are being made to intimidate the leaders of opposition parties by misusing ED, CBI and Income Tax in the country. Using these probe agencies, the BJP is hatching a conspiracy to overthrow the governments elected by the people. Popular CMs, who are loved by the public, are being arrested under false accusations.”
The Chief Minister of Jharkhand stated that the Modi led central government is exercising a dictatorial attitude. Arresting someone solely on the basis of statements is fatal for the democracy.
“Our youth leaders were trying to connect the tribals, natives, Dalits, and the backward classes with the mainstream for development, which was obviously not liked by the BJP.”
The Jharkhand chief minister said today, a message has gone out from the Ramlila Maidan to the whole country that we are all united against the dictatorial forces in this campaign to save the democracy of India and together, we will uproot the dictatorial BJP.
Addressing those sitting on the dais, Congress senior leader Shri Rahul Gandhi took the names of Shri Arvind Kejriwal and Shri Hemant Soren. “I am taking the names of Kejriwal ji and Soren ji because today they are not here, but we all are united by heart,” he said.
Comparing the state of affairs in the run up to the Lok Sabha elections with match-fixing in cricket, Shri Rahul Gandhi said, “When a match is won by dishonestly putting pressure on the umpire, buying players, intimidating the captain, it is called match fixing in cricket. We have Lok Sabha elections in front of us, Narendra Modi chose the umpire, arrested two players from our team Arvind Kejriwal and Hemant Soren before the start of the match and put them in jail. So, Narendra Modi ji is trying to do match fixing in this election. There slogan is 400 seats. Without EVMs, without match fixing, without putting pressure on social media and press, it is not going to reach 180 seats.”
Referring to the freezing of bank accounts of the Congress, Shri Rahul Gandhi said the Congress is the biggest opposition party and all their bank accounts have been frozen. “All our bank accounts have been closed in the midst of elections. We have to run a campaign, we have to send people to the states, we have to put up posters, all our resources, bank accounts are closed. So, what kind of elections are taking place, leaders are threatened, governments are brought down by paying money, leaders _ Kejriwal ji and Soren ji _are put in jail. This is a complete attempt to fix the match,” he said.
Shri Rahul Gandhi said this fight is to save the Constitution, if Constitution is lost then rights and reservation of poor will be lost.
He further said today one percent people have all the wealth of India and today the unemployment in the country is the highest in 40 years.
The senior Congress leader cautioned if the BJP succeeds in its game-plan, it will change the Constitution of India. “You listen to me carefully, if the BJP wins the election by match-fixing and after that they change the Constitution, then this whole country is going to be on fire. Remember what I said, this country will not be saved, this election is not an election for votes, this election is an election to save India, to protect the Constitution,” concluded Shri Rahul Gandhi.
Kalpana Soren, wife of Shri Hemant Soren, expressed gratitude to the AAP and the INDIA alliance members for organising a mass rally. “Today, the great historical turnout of public in this ground is a witness to the fact that no matter how many efforts these dictators have put in murdering democracy, the public will fight against it. Kalpana Soren said the NDA government is destroying the fundamental rights of the public given by Baba Saheb’s Constitution of India. Today, unemployment has reached its height, inflation is at its peak, rights of people are being taken away. “No matter how big a leader is, he cannot be bigger than the nation, no party is bigger than the public. Today, the public is the most powerful entity. You need to vote for the right people, the INDIA Alliance, if you want to save the country, if you want to save democracy, if you want to fight for your rights.”
“Hemant Soren ji was arrested on 31 January 2024, he has been in jail for two months. Shri Arvind Kejriwal has been in jail for 10 days now. Till date, the agencies have not been able to prove anything. The public must prove that there’s nothing more powerful than the public mandate. The dictatorial power has to be uprooted and thrown out of the country in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections”, stated Kalpana Soren.
To save country’s constitution and democracy, there must be a united stand against BJP: Sharad Pawar
NCP chief Shri Sharad Pawar said that the actions taken by the BJP government, such as sending Delhi CM Shri Arvind Kejriwal and Jharkhand CM Shri Hemant Soren to jail, are an attack on the country’s democracy and constitution. Former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir and President of the PDP, Mehbooba Mufti, said that today the country is going through very difficult times. The Trinamool Congress is always with the INDIA Alliance. This fight is between the BJP and democracy.
Conch blowing marks the grand struggle
Today, the conch was blown to mark the grand struggle against tyranny at the Ram Leela Maidan. Supporters wearing AAP caps chanted ‘Vande Mataram’ while blowing the conch. Supporters danced around continuously to spread the sound of the conch in all directions. Party workers said that the conch has now sounded against Modi’s tyranny.

In the Ram Leela Maidan, posters of imprisoned CM Shri Arvind Kejriwal were plastered on all sides. The posters had the slogan ‘Remove tyranny – Save democracy’ written on them. These posters moved the patriots gathered at the Ram Leela Maidan. People from all walks of life in Delhi came together to show support for Shri Arvind Kejriwal, who ensures uninterrupted services such as electricity, water, education, healthcare, women’s travel in buses, and pilgrimage for all classes. Supporters chanted “Modi fears Kejriwal.”

In the rally, banners and posters with the slogan “Modi’s biggest fear is Kejriwal” were also seen in the hands of supporters. People held these banners and posters in their hands, expressing their opposition and chanting slogans. People were saying that Modi fears only Arvind Kejriwal. Therefore, the Modi government is targeting the Aam Aadmi Party for elimination.

Through this poster, an attempt was made to appeal to the people of the country that the central authoritarian government is taking steps against the law at every turn. Large crowd began to gather from morning
The influx of patriots from Delhi and other states to the Ram Leela Maidan began early in the morning. People were marching towards the Ram Leela Maidan, chanting slogans against the authoritarian government. Police stopped people from entering field as crowd surged
To raise their voices against tyranny, a flood of people gathered at Delhi’s Ram Leela Maidan on Sunday. Since morning, there had been a continuous influx of people, and even as the leaders began their speeches, more kept arriving. Unable to accommodate the heavy crowd in the field, the police stopped people outside the gates. Complaints were made about this from the stage. Subsequently, senior leader of the ‘AAP’ party, Saurabh Bharadwaj, who was conducting the stage, asked the police officers to open the gates so that the people waiting outside could enter and listen to the speeches of their beloved leaders.
