In a testament to the Kejriwal Government’s unwavering dedication, under the visionary leadership of CM Shri Arvind Kejriwal, a significant step towards enhancing transparency and safeguarding consumer rights was taken today. The inauguration of the state-of-the-art office complex of the Legal Metrology Department by Food Supply & Consumer Affairs Minister Shri Imran Hussain at Plot No.17, Institutional Area, Vishwas Nagar, Delhi marks a pivotal moment for the people of Delhi.
During the occasion, Mr. V.P. Kavle, Secretary (Legal Metrology), Mr. Pankaj Kumar, Controller of the Weights and Measure Department, and Mr. Eda Raja Babu, Secretary to the Food Supplies and Consumer Affairs Minister, were among the dignitaries present, alongside other senior officers from the Legal Metrology Department and PWD. The building spans a total built-up area of 763.71 square meters, with each floor covering 190.87 square meters. Featuring a ground floor and four storeys, the structure is made of an RCC frame. To enhance accessibility for the general public, the building is equipped with air conditioning and an electric lift.
F&S Minister Shri Imran Hussain, representing the Kejriwal government, extended congratulations to the officers of the Weights & Measures Department and commended the Public Works Department for their diligent efforts in completing the project within the stipulated time frame.
During this, The Minister informed that the building will now work as the Headquarter of the Legal Metrology Department which will house the Controller and Asst. Controller’s offices of the Department. The new office complex will also have two Zonal offices of the Legal Metrology department, state of art labs duly equipped with scientific labs and instruments including working standard laboratories & secondary laboratory.
The Minister expressed confidence that the commencement of the functioning of the new Legal Metrology office at Vishwas Nagar will bring huge relief to the people of Delhi especially those living in East and North East Delhi as the applicants will save a lot of time and effort in getting the necessary verification, stamping and calibration of devices done for calibration of the weights and measuring instruments/devices. Now adequate office space is available in this new State-of-the-art building of the Metrology Department, the office building is equipped with better facilities so that the work of verification of measuring and weighing instruments of applicants will be done more conveniently. Establishment and operationalization of the new building will also ensure that the applicants do not have to travel long distances for necessary stamping, verification and calibration of devices.
On this occasion, the Consumer Affairs Minister said that the Weights and Measures Department is also moving forward to digitize the process of verification of all types of measuring instruments through an online system, which will soon be made available to the applicants. Through this Online process, thousands of traders and shopkeepers will benefit by getting the facility to deposit requisite fees and download certificates related to the verification of measuring instruments.
Legal Metrology Department Controller Pankaj Kumar informed that the Weights and Measures Department is engaged in regulating use of correct weighing and measuring instruments in production, trade and commerce to ensure that exact weight, measure and number of any commodity is provided to customer as contracted for, or paid for by him. The Department also safeguards consumers’ interest by ensuring mandatory declarations on packaged commodities. The L&M Department verified a total of 8,63,427 weights and measures instruments in the year 2023-24. The L&M Department has 152 manufacturers, 441 dealers and 237 repairers as registered licensees under the department.
While addressing the people, the Minister Shri Imran Hussain said, “The Weights and Measures Department is directly related to the common people, hence the department should ensure that people get the right value for their money. The Legal Metrology Department should ensure to get the correct measurement of the commodities we use in daily purposes. The department should also ensure that the people of Delhi get the accurate measure of petrol, CNG and all packaged commodities.”
The Weights and Measures Department also undertakes verification/calibration of auto-rickshaws/taxi fare meters, tank lorries, and petrol dispensing units. It should also conduct regular checking of fare meters of auto rickshaw/taxis on road in association with the State Transport Authority and Delhi Traffic Police.
