Fortnight long joint campaign of Delhi govt and Union Environment Ministry

A fortnight long “Clean Air for Delhi Campaign”is being jointly organized by the Delhi Government in association with the Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change from Saturday (10th February) to 23rd February in order to create awareness among the people of Delhi for avoiding activities which lead to air pollution in the national capital.

In a meeting between the Union Environment Minister Dr Harsh Vardhan and Delhi Environment Minister Mr Imran Hussain on 6thFebruary, it was decided that there is an urgent need for creating awareness among people about the ill-effects of air pollution and enlightening them about various aspects and sources which cause air pollution.

It was accordingly decided that two teams in each of 33 sub-divisions of Delhi be constituted under the supervision of Sub Divisional Magistrates or Tehsildars. These teams will include officers from respective Municipal Corporations, Delhi Pollution Control Committee/Environment Department, Environmental Marshals, officers of Union Environment Ministry/Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB)  and representatives of concerned RWAs/Market Traders and Industrial Associations.

These teams will take preventive action against various instances of causes/sources of air and noise pollution such as:-

  • Garbage burning
  • Stubble burning
  • Vehicular emission/Traffic choke points/ Measures to ease congestion
  • Encroachment of roads by Parking leading to congestion
  • Dug up and Dusty roads
  • Industrial emission
  • Construction and demolition waste
  • Use of power generators/DG sets

It was further, decided that “Clean Air for Delhi” Campaign would mainly focus on educating the masses and creating awareness amongst them. Coercive/punitive action will be taken only where it is considered absolutely necessary.

At the end of the Campaign, its success will be determined and evaluated on the basis of the air quality index in Delhi.
