In a significant step towards enhancing road safety and improving driving standards, the Pr.Secretary-cum- Transport Commissioner, Shri Ashish Kundra, today inaugurated the Delhi’s 16th Automated Driving Test Track (ADTT). The inauguration ceremony took place at the newly developed ADTT located at Lado Sarai. This latest addition marks a milestone in Delhi’s commitment to providing state-of-the-art infrastructure for conducting driving tests and all the Driving Test centers in Delhi are fully automated now.
In a statement issued by Transport Minister Shri Kailash Gahlot, he stated “At times, we do hear from people that to get a Driving license in Delhi, one really needs to be skilled in driving. It has ensured that the Delhi roads will be safer and safer to drive in the coming years. This shall also strengthened the vision of Chief Minister Shri Arvind Kejriwal of lesser road accidents in Delhi and reduction in the number of fatalities due to it. Using the technology, Delhi has gone faceless in 2021 for all of its services barring actual driving test and fitness of vehicles. I would like to congratulate CSR division of Maruti Suzuki for its collaboration with the Transport department in constructing and maintaining these scientifically designed Driving test tracks. Delhi is committed to revolutionalise complete transportation along with the usage of technology to have more efficient systems all around.”
The first Automated Driving Test Track in Delhi was established in March 2019, and since then, the city has seen rapid progress in this domain. With the addition of the 16th ADTT, Delhi now boasts a total of 13 ADTTs and 3 Integrated Driving Test Tracks (IDTRs) strategically located across the city.
On average, daily test at the ADTT (Automated Driving Test Track) in Delhi is 150 to 170 per day, specifically at facilities that operate during the day only. However, at test centers that provide both day and night facilities, the number of tests conducted increases to 180 to 210 on a daily basis. Currently, the ADTT offers night driving test facilities at three locations: Mayur Vihar, Shakur Basti, and Vishwas Nagar.
Looking ahead, the Delhi government has devised a unique approach to establish new driving test tracks in the city by partnering with educational institutes. As a result, Delhi will have an additional eight ADTTs located within these institutes. By June 2023, six of these new facilities will be ready for operation. The institutes involved in this initiative include ITI Jail Road, ITI Shahdara, ITI Pusa, ITI Jaffarpur, ITI Mayur Vihar, and ITI Narela. These six ADTTs are scheduled to be fully operational by the end of June 2023. On the other hand, the development of ADTTs at Delhi Technological University and Indira Gandhi Delhi Technical University for Women, Kashmere Gate, is currently in the planning phase.
Maruti Suzuki, a leading automobile manufacturer, has played a crucial role in the development of the ADTTs as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative. The company has not only constructed the test tracks but has also provided the necessary equipment required for conducting the driving tests. Maruti Suzuki will further maintain these test tracks for the initial three years before handing them over to the Transport department. Speaking at the occasion, Mr. Rahul Bharti, Executive Officer, Corporate Affairs, Maruti Suzuki said, “Setting up Automated Driving Test Tracks (ADTTs) by Maruti Suzuki is a one-of-its-kind initiative undertaken by the company in partnership with the Delhi Transport Department by use of technology for evaluation. In these ADTTs, driving license seekers get tested on their driving skills by video analytics technology with zero human intervention, all within 10 minutes cycle time. We thank the Transport Minister of Delhi, Shri Kailash Gahlot for giving us this opportunity, facilitation and encouragement.”
The ADTTs are designed to evaluate applicants’ driving skills for both two-wheelers and four-wheelers separately. These scientifically engineered test tracks assess various driving abilities, including reverse parallel parking, negotiating up-gradients, maneuvering reverse-S patterns, emergency braking, and riding on ramps. To ensure accuracy and impartiality, high-definition cameras are installed along the tracks, capturing every moment of the test without any human intervention.
One of the key features of the ADTTs is the time-bound nature of the skill tests, which ensures a more efficient and streamlined process. Upon completion of each skill test, the pass or fail result is promptly displayed on an LED board, allowing the applicants to proceed to the next test. Moreover, special exit passages have been constructed on each track, enabling those who fail a test midway to exit without disturbing other applicants.
