Delhi Jal Board Vice Chairman Shri Somnath Bharti inspected the Kondli Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) on Friday that is being developed under Yamuna Action Plan-III and took stock of the progress of the project. Top officials of Delhi Jal Board were also present during the inspection. During the visit, Somnath Bharti inspected the treatment area and construction site of the plant. Delhi Jal Board is developing Kondli WWTP in 4 phases. The DJB Vice Chairman, while examining the samples of treated water coming out of the WWTP in the presence of the media, said that water is being treated at a higher level in this plant than prescribed parameters. Describing Kondli WWTP as an important step by Chief Minister Shri Arvind Kejriwal for cleaning River Yamuna, Shri Somnath Bharti said that the work of Kondli WWTP Phase 2 is about to complete and this phase of the plant will become operational from May 5. This phase will soon be operating at its full potential. Phase – 4 of Kondli WWTP will also reach its full capacity by September, 2023. Kondli WWTP has a capacity of 45 MGD. Phase 4 of the WWTP is currently operating at 50 per cent capacity. A total of 90 MGD of wastewater will be treated at Kondli WWTP on an everyday basis.
Phase-2 of Kondli WWTP will be operational by next week, Phase-4 will be fully functional in September
During the WWTP inspection, the Vice Chairman said that Chief Minister Shri Arvind Kejriwal has two dreams. One, the CM wants every Delhi resident to take a dip in a clean Yamuna River by 2025 and second, clean drinking water should be supplied 24X7 to every household of Delhi through tap. Delhi Government, Delhi Jal Board and the MLAs of Aam Aadmi Party are constantly striving to fulfill these dreams of CM Shri Arvind Kejriwal and today I have come to inspect the Kondli WWTP towards fulfilling these dreams. Shri Somnath Bharti stated that Kondli WWTP is being upgraded in four phases under Yamuna Action Plan-III. The capacity of Phase-1 and Phase-3 of this plant is 10 MGD each and the treated water in these phases is better than the prescribed standards. The treated water of these two plants is better than the prescribed standards of BOD 10/10 and TSS (Total Suspended Solids) 10/10. He also mentioned that developmental work of Phase 2 of Kondli WWTP will be complete soon and sewage treatment will begin in this phase from May 5. The Phase-2 of the project will be operational at its full capacity. Kondli WWTP Phase 2 has a capacity of 25 MGD. The upgradation of Phase 4 of Kondli WWTP is in its final stages. Phase 4 of the project will be fully functional by September. Kondli WWTP Phase 4 has a capacity of 45 MGD. Phase 4 of this plant has just become operational at 50 per cent capacity. A total of 90 MGD of waste water will be treated at Kondli WWTP on an everyday basis. Shri Somnath Bharti continued by stating that the treatment of wastewater in this plant will be better than the prescribed standards.
90 MGD of treated water will be re-used to increase groundwater levels
During the inspection, Shri Somnath Bharti said that the Delhi Jal Board has prepared a plan for the re-use of the treated water coming out of this WWTP. The DJB Deputy Chairman said that Delhi Jal Board has two options for the treated water. It could either be out-poured into Yamuna river or it could be re-used again for multiple purposes. As per the instructions of Chief Minister Shri Arvind Kejriwal, the treater water from Kondli will be used to fill natural and artificially created lakes that will help increase ground water level of the national capital. Shri Somnath Bharti said that out of the total treated water from Kondli WWTP, 20 MGD of water would go to Sanjay Lake. Similarly, 10 MGD treated water will be delivered to Smriti Van. The DJB officials have been instructed to finish this task by July 15, 2023.The remaining 60 MGD of treated water will be pumped into more artificially created lakes to increase the underground aquifers. Thereafter, water will be extracted from the ground by installing tubewells. RO plants will also be installed to clean the extracted water and pure drinking water will be brought into the supply system of Delhi. This way, Delhi will be made self-sufficient in terms of drinking water availability and Delhi residents could be provided with clean water supply 24-hour a day.
30 tubewells to be installed at Kondli WWTP and 35 in nearby Ghazipur
With the objective of cleaning the Yamuna River by 2025, the Delhi Jal Board is simultaneously working on developing new sources of water and increasing water production in Delhi. In this series, a plan for the installation of 30 tubewells has been proposed within Kondli WWTP premises. The DJB Vice Chairman said that an RO plant will also be set up at the WWTP to clean the water extracted through tubewells. DJB has issued the tender for the setting up RO plant today and the installation work of RO will start by July 15. There is also a proposal for the installation of 35 new tubewells around the Ghazipur drain. Here also an RO plant will also be installed to clean the extracted water. With the completion of these projects, water supply in the surrounding areas will improve significantly and this will also prove to be a milestone in realizing Chief Minister Shri Arvind Kejriwal’s dream of 24X7 clean water supply in Delhi.
