Chandni Chowk
“It is a historical heritage site and the entire area has been made very beautiful, seeking to bring back the glory of this old historical place. After the beautification of Chandni Chowk, tourism would get a major boost, and people coming to Delhi would be attracted to pay a visit to Chandni Chowk.” – Arvind Kejriwal, Delhi CM (Link)

The AAP Delhi Government inaugurated the newly developed Chandni Chowk market on 12th Sep 2021. A stretch of around 1.4 km from the Red Fort to the Fatehpuri Masjid crossing has been beautified. It is now a pedestrian-friendly corridor where only e-rickshaws ply from 9 am to 9 pm.
Completed at a cost of 99 crores and involving as many as 17 stakeholders, the project was designed to boost tourism and “make public spaces more accessible”.
It has won praise from commoners and experts alike including the award for “Excellence in Urban Transport in Best Non-Motorised Transport Category” at the 14th Urban Mobility India Conference organised by the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Development.
Traffic jams, broken roads and overhanging wires gave way to red granite stone, decorative lights and underground wires. The whole street was potted with plants. Pavements were widened for a better walking experience. Old water and sewage lines were replaced and fire hydrants and new gas pipelines laid along the entire stretch for safer food joints that are now allowed to stay open till midnight to boost an influx of tourists.
Renovation of Dilli Haat
A grant of Rs 6 crore has been approved by Deputy CM Manish Sisodia, who also holds the Delhi Tourism Ministry portfolio, to renovate Dilli Haat. Tenders have been called for the renovation work.
