The Delhi government’s multifaceted approach to tackling air pollution is aimed at addressing the major contributors to poor air quality in the city. Dust and open burning of waste are primary pollutants that need to be curbed. To this end, the Delhi government has launched a 14-point Summer Action Plan, which includes a range of measures to control dust pollution, manage solid waste, increase green cover, and revive dried-up lakes.
To control dust pollution, the government is deploying mechanized sweepers, water sprinklers, and anti-smog guns across the city. Patrolling teams are being deployed during the day and at night to check dust pollution, while real-time apportionment studies will help identify sources of pollution. The government has also mandated self-registration of all construction sites above 500 square meters on the Construction and Demolition (C&D) portal, with strict action to be taken against violations of the 14 construction rules.
In addition to these measures, the Delhi government is also taking steps to increase green cover in the city. Under the Summer Action Plan, the government is targeting the planting of 5.2 million saplings and creating seven city forests that will include facilities such as cycle tracks and canopy walks. The government is also working with the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) and the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) to beautify parks across the city.
The government is also focused on reviving dried-up lakes to help recharge the groundwater table. Furthermore, the government is creating an e-waste eco-park to tackle electronic waste, with a 20-acre site identified in Holambi Kalan.
These initiatives reflect the Delhi government’s commitment to improving the environment and curbing pollution in the city. Pollution levels have already reduced by 30% in 2022 compared to 2016, with sustained exposure to microscopic particles leading to respiratory problems. The government’s aim is to reduce the primary pollutants, including PM10, and pollution caused by dust and open burning. The government’s long-term efforts will have a positive impact on the health and well-being of Delhi’s residents, as well as the environment.
