Delhi’s Kejriwal government will open soon the fifth Old Age Home, equipped with world-class facilities that will be available to destitute elderly residents. The construction of Delhi’s fifth Old Age Home in Paschim Vihar, with all modern amenities, is almost complete. The Old Age Home, named ‘Savitribai Phule Senior Citizen Home’, will soon be a haven for elderly destitute. The old age home has a capacity to house 96 people.
CM Shri Arvind Kejriwal has granted the formal approval for the old age home to become operational, and the file has been sent to the Lieutenant Governor (LG) for notification. Currently, Delhi has four operational Old Age Homes, providing accommodation for 505 elderly destitute residents.

Under the guidance of CM Shri Arvind Kejriwal, the Delhi government’s Social Welfare Department is constructing this fifth Old Age Home in Paschim Vihar. The government is arranging all modern amenities for destitute residents in the home.

Special attention has been given to the conveniences for the elderly in the construction of this Old Age Home. Residents of this home will be provided with free accommodation, meals, clothing, and bedding. Additionally, facilities like TV, radio, and books will be available for the entertainment of the elderly. The home will have a recreational center for the elderly, and their health will be well taken care of with the provision of doctors and physiotherapy. CM Shri Arvind Kejriwal has granted approval for the formal opening of the Savitribai Phule Senior Citizen Home, and the file has been sent to the LG.

Four Old Age Homes already operational in Delhi

Currently, the Social Welfare Department in Delhi is running four Old Age Homes. The first Old Age Home was built in Bindapur in the South-West district in 1974, accommodating 52 elderly destitute. The second, Jyotiba Phule Old Age Home in Ashok Vihar, North Delhi, started in 2019 with a capacity to accommodate 36 residents. The third, Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Senior Citizen Home in Kanti Nagar, East Delhi, accommodates 117 individuals. The fourth Old Age Home is operational in Tahirpur, providing world-class facilities to 300 elderly residents. The Old Age Homes in Kanti Nagar and Tahirpur became operational in 2022.

Facilities at the Old Age Home:

i). The home consists of 50 well-ventilated rooms with attached bathrooms and shower facilities.
ii). Recreational center
iii). Modern kitchen and dining area
iv). Parking facility
v). Public announcement system
vi). Free accommodation, meals, clothing, and bedding
vii). Case work and counseling services
viii). Medical care for the elderly
ix). Physiotherapy
x). Entertainment facilities including TV, radio, books, and cultural programs

Eligibility Criteria for Residency in the Old Age Home:

The Old Age Home in Delhi is open to impoverished, destitute, and elderly individuals aged 60 years or older. Those who lack means for sustenance or have no one to care for them are eligible for entry.

Admission Process:

Admission to the Old Age Home will be voluntary. Interested individuals need to apply with certain documents to the Social Security Branch of the Social Welfare Department at the main office, under the Deputy Director or Director (Senior Citizen Residence). The application must include a copy of the age certificate, health certificate, and proof of residence or domicile in Delhi. Upon receiving the application, the Director and Welfare Officer will promptly conduct an assessment to determine if the applicant meets the eligibility criteria. A social investigation report and the officer’s recommendations, along with an inspection report after visiting the area, will be presented to the Director for decision, in consultation with the District Social Welfare Officer and the Superintendent. Afterward, applicants will be informed of their eligibility for residence in the Senior Citizen Home.
